Items We Can't Haul
And What to Do Instead

Almost everything is fair game. This is the short list of items that need specialized disposal, and what to do with each one.

The vast majority of what you have, we take. Furniture, appliances, mattresses, exercise equipment, construction debris, yard debris, hot tubs, tires. If it's not on this list, we haul it. See everything we take.

Restricted Items

Wet or liquid paint

Flammable and regulated for disposal. Small amounts of dried paint in sealed cans are fine.

What to do instead: Most counties have a hazardous waste collection day. Check Hartford, Tolland, or Middlesex County's waste calendar.

Motor oil, gasoline, and automotive fluids

Require licensed hazmat disposal. We can take the container once it's empty and dry.

What to do instead: AutoZone, O'Reilly, and Advance Auto parts locations in the area accept used motor oil for recycling.

Propane tanks (empty or full)

Tanks hold residual gas under pressure even when they read empty, which is a fire risk in a loaded truck.

What to do instead: Blue Rhino and AmeriGas take old tanks back at most grocery and hardware stores, usually free with an exchange.

Asbestos and materials with asbestos

Requires specialized abatement. Common in homes built before 1980: floor tiles, pipe insulation, popcorn ceilings.

What to do instead: A licensed asbestos abatement contractor must remove and certify the material first. Once cleared, we handle the rest.

Medical and biohazard waste

Sharps, medications, bandages, and medical equipment require licensed medical waste disposal.

What to do instead: Many pharmacies accept unused medications. Hartford County and surrounding areas have sharps disposal programs.

Chemicals, solvents, and pesticides

Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, and industrial solvents need hazmat handling.

What to do instead: Hartford County, Tolland County, and Middlesex County each offer hazardous waste collection events through their solid waste programs.

Car batteries and lead-acid batteries

Lead and acid are regulated and can leak or short in a loaded truck.

What to do instead: AutoZone, O'Reilly, and Advance Auto take car batteries back for recycling, often with a core credit.

Firearms and ammunition

Transport and disposal are legally restricted and we are not licensed to handle them.

What to do instead: Your local police department runs drop-off and buyback programs for both.

Boats, cars, and other vehicles

Titled vehicles need a licensed salvage handler, not a junk removal truck.

What to do instead: A local auto salvage yard or a vehicle donation program will usually tow it free.

Pianos

Uprights and grands need specialty moving gear and crew, and disposal outlets are limited.

What to do instead: A licensed piano mover can relocate or dispose of it. We handle everything else in the room.
