Junk Removal Cost in CT: What Actually Drives the Price

Published August 1, 2026

Most junk removal quotes in Connecticut are vague until a truck shows up. Here’s how it actually works, and the real rate card we quote from.

Volume Is the Main Driver, Not Weight

Junk removal pricing in Hartford County is almost always based on how much space your items take up in the truck, not how heavy they are (with a few exceptions noted below). Companies price in fractions of a truckload because that’s what determines labor time and disposal volume.

We quote in load-size fractions — from a minimum charge up through a full load, stepped in eighths so you’re only paying for the space your items actually take up, not a flat per-job rate. For smaller, single-item jobs we also run a separate bedload (pickup-truck-bed) scale with its own minimum and full-bedload price.

See the current rate card, updated whenever pricing changes: /pricing/.

What Pushes a Job Above the Base Rate

A handful of items carry their own recycling or disposal surcharge on top of the load price, because they can’t go through a standard transfer station the way general junk can:

  • Tires — a flat per-tire fee, higher if the rim is still on
  • Mattress or box springs — a per-item fee, plus a labor fee if it needs to be carried out
  • Freon-containing appliances (fridges, AC units, freezers) — a per-item fee
  • E-waste (TVs, monitors, electronics) — a per-item fee

Exact surcharge amounts are on the current rate card.

The Exception: Heavy Materials

Concrete, brick, dirt, roofing, and shingles don’t follow the volume scale at all — they’re billed at the bedload rate with a surcharge, because they’re dense enough that a “load” of them weighs far more than a load of furniture and boxes. If your project includes any of these, expect the quote to reflect weight, not just volume.

Why We Quote On-Site, Not Over the Phone

A phone estimate for junk removal is a guess. The only way to price a job accurately is to look at the actual volume, note anything on the surcharge list above, and lock the number before anything gets loaded. That’s how every TJ’s estimate works: free on-site assessment, price approved by you before we touch a single item, no change once the truck is loaded.
